In the future, older teachers in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania will have to do fewer lessons earlier than before – with the same salary.
The so-called "age credit hours" should be granted faster after reaching a certain age limit.
This was announced by the Ministry of Education in Schwerin - regardless of current discussions about the lack of teachers and the proposal to let teachers work more and longer in old age.
For example, the Standing Scientific Commission of the Conference of Ministers of Education recommended limiting part-time work for teachers and allowing older teachers to teach longer.

So far, teachers in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania have received one hour from the age of 57, two from the age of 60 and four from the age of 63 – but only from the school year following their birthday.
With the new state regulation, this should be brought forward.
According to the ministry, as of February 1, 2024, around 4,600 teachers in the north-east are expected to receive age credit hours.
Other federal states also grant older teachers reductions in the number of teaching hours.
Oldenburg announced that it intends to provide more than 100 permanent positions to compensate for the hours credited.
The minister put the costs for this at up to 13.3 million euros per year.
She did not say where she intends to recruit the additional teachers from in view of the empty job market.
Last year, the state tried to persuade vacationing teachers to move to the Baltic Sea with an advertising campaign in the vacation areas.
