Exactly 35 years to the day after the crime, the Cologne police arrested the alleged perpetrator in the "Petra Nohl" murder case.
Investigators had executed an arrest warrant against a 56-year-old man from Cologne-Bilderstöckchen in the morning, the officials said.
The then 24-year-old Nohl was attacked in the night of Carnival Sunday 1988 in the old town.
The now detained is accused of having strangled her.
The case remained unsolved for decades until investigators reopened it.
Last December it was the subject of »Aktenzeichen XY«.
A witness reference based on this program and a new DNA analysis led the investigators to the suspect.
