Lufthansa grounded all of its flights worldwide today (Wednesday), after damage to the broadband cable system of the telecommunications company "Deutsche Telecom" caused widespread technological problems.
A Lufthansa spokesman said that the problems affect the company's ground systems, including check-in operations.
As a result of the malfunction, German traffic control is diverting landings from Frankfurt, Lufthansa's main base, to avoid an overflow of passengers.
It is not clear how long it will take to fix the resulting technology problems.
Lufthansa's global flight operations center is located on the outskirts of Frankfurt Airport.
The damage to communication links to the facility may cause problems in the company's ground technology systems around the world.
Lufthansa confirmed in a tweet that the problems were caused by construction work in the Frankfurt area.
Flights are routed to other airports in Germany, including Nuremberg, Cologne and Dusseldorf.
It is not known how long it will take to fix the problem
Deutsche Telekom spokesman Peter Kaspol said that four broadband fiber cables on a Deutsche Bahn railway had been damaged since Tuesday.
The cables were damaged by concrete drilling, during work that was not commissioned and not performed by Deutsche Telekom.
The company has already repaired two of the cables and is still working on the others.
Kaspol said Deutsche Telekom could not immediately say how long it would take to complete the repairs.
In total, Lufthansa has around 700 aircraft, making it the largest airline in Europe by fleet size.
Airlines under it include its namesake brand and national flagships Austrian Airlines, Brussels Airlines and Swiss.
The company also operates a low-cost company under the "Eurowings" brand as well as other small brands.
