More than 60% of workers in eurozone countries had never worked from home before the pandemic
, but after the anti-Covid restrictions led the majority to experiment with remote working, many do not want to go back to the past.
According to the European Central Bank's Consumer Expectations Survey,
around two-thirds of workers surveyed in May 2022 say they would like to work from home at least one day a week
.
Furthermore, around 25% would prefer between two and four days of smart work per week.
"These numbers - notes the ECB's analysis - suggest a desire for hybrid forms of work that would prevail beyond the restrictions and health concerns due to the pandemic".
The study also indicates how “home working preferences may influence job-seeking behaviour” with increased interest in opportunities that allow for more remote work.
Personal characteristics and specifics of the tasks to be performed help determine preferences for remote working
.
In particular, workers who take more than an hour to commute want on average ten days to work from home a month, while those who take less than 15 minutes would like six.
The desire for more smart working days per month also characterizes young people, women and families with children up to the age of six in particular.
