Headaches, nausea, dizziness: Travel sickness can spoil the start of your vacation.

With a few tricks, the next trip will be child's play.

Stuttgart - The start of the holiday should be something nice.

But often the departure is associated with stress and hectic.

If travel sickness also comes into play, the anticipation is gone.

Children in particular often suffer from dizziness and nausea in the car, train, plane or on the ship.

But adults are not spared either.

Travel sickness, also known as motion sickness, can affect anyone.

BW24 explains the development, symptoms and what you can do about it.

Kinetosis: When the brain goes haywire

Nausea, headaches, dizziness and even vomiting - the symptoms of motion sickness are varied.

But they all go back to the same cause: If our balance organ in the inner ear perceives different movements than what our eyes see, our brain is "confused" because it is receiving contradictory information.

This becomes clear using the example of driving a car: the eyes report the interior of the vehicle to the brain as something stationary and immobile.

At the same time, however, the balance organ in the inner ear sends a different signal.

Since it perceives fluctuations and vibrations from the journey, it tells the brain: We are on the move.

Many bodies cannot cope with these contradictory signals.

Children in particular often suffer from motion sickness because their brains are not yet able to properly process the various sensory impressions.

Motion sickness usually goes away over time, but it can persist into adulthood.

Headache, nausea and dizziness: When it comes to travel sickness, space is crucial

With simple means, however, something can be done against motion sickness.

However, everyone has to find out for themselves which one works best for them.

Rule number one: Distraction is the best medicine.

Reading or watching videos on your cell phone or tablet is not a good idea.

These activities confuse the brain even more and may increase symptoms such as headaches or nausea.

Games like “I see something you don’t see”, singing along to songs or guessing license plates are more helpful.

Not only distraction is important, the right seat can also make a difference.

If you get sick quickly when driving, you should sit in the front of the car and train if possible.

In the latter always in the direction of travel.

People who are sick should drive themselves if possible.

So you can concentrate on the journey and perceive external and confusing sensory impressions less.

If you don't drive yourself, you should look outside as much as possible and fixate on a stationary point on the horizon and concentrate on it.

It's best to roll down the window.

The fresh air helps against the nausea.

Of course, open windows and license plate rates are not possible on an airplane.

But here, too, you can do something about travel sickness in advance.

The choice of the seat helps enormously here.

You should never sit at the front or the back of an airplane.

A place in the aisle near the wings is advisable, as it doesn't wobble that much there.

If you want to avoid stress on arrival, you should consider a few tricks in advance: With the right tips, luggage is not so easily lost on air travel.

Traveling by ship is similar to flying: it's best to stay in the middle.

There the swell is not felt too much.

Anyone on deck should look towards the horizon.

Chewing gum, ginger and Co.: These remedies alleviate the symptoms of motion sickness

If none of the above tips help at all, there are a few other tricks you can use.

Chewing gum, as well as fruit and vegetables, can alleviate the symptoms.

Ginger can also help against travel sickness.

It's not just good for the next holiday: ginger is a booster for the immune system.

Special travel tablets, chewing gum and plasters are also available in pharmacies.

The latter are prescribed by doctors in severe cases of motion sickness.

The patches contain scopolamine and are stuck behind the ear and releases its active ingredient through the skin.

However, these are not the panacea either: the side effects such as dizziness or blurred vision can be extreme.
