(ANSA-AFP) - TLAJOMULCO DE ZÚÑIGA, FEBRUARY 16 - Thirty-one bodies buried in two clandestine graves have been discovered in western Mexico, in an area affected by violence linked to organized crime.

"We have already counted 31 victims," said Jalisco state prosecutor Luis Joaquin Mendez, adding that the authorities have found evidence that allows them to identify half of the bodies and then hand them over to their families.

A first grave was located on February 1 in the locality of San Isidro Mazatepec, in the municipality of Tlajomulco de Zúñigan.

After several days of investigations and the extraction of several sacks containing bodies, a second burial was identified.

The state of Jalisco, controlled by the powerful Cartel de Jalisco Nouvelle Génération (CJNG), is one of the most affected by violence linked to organized crime.

In 2022, 301 bodies were discovered there, distributed among 41 clandestine graves, compared to 544 remains in 2020, the highest number to date.
