As a pensioner in rehabilitation – who chooses the right rehabilitation clinic?
Anyone who can only work by the hour or not at all in Germany is entitled to a disability pension.
Before this pension can be paid out on application, however, work should be carried out on consumers' incapacity to work.
The motto of the German pension insurance: "Rehab before pension".
This rehabilitation can be carried out on an outpatient or inpatient basis and is intended to enable patients to work again.
If the pension insurance company opts for inpatient rehabilitation, a rehabilitation clinic must be selected.

How much say does the consumer have in the choice?
As the German pension insurance writes, medical rehabilitation is individually tailored to the needs of the person to be treated.
When choosing a rehabilitation clinic, not only the diagnosis but also the personal circumstances are taken into account.
When applying for rehabilitation, consumers are therefore encouraged to “make use of their right to wish and choose and communicate their wishes and requirements.”
Consumers are entitled to more than a say in the rehabilitation clinic
The German pension insurance writes about a say in the selection of the rehabilitation clinic - but how far does this go?
First of all, the conditions apply that the self-selected rehabilitation center is suitable for the upcoming rehabilitation measures.
In addition, it must be accessible within a reasonable time.
If no space is available, the selected clinic will be canceled anyway.
In Section 8 SGB IX, this right to choose is formulated much more strictly.
Accordingly, consumers do not have to adhere to the clinic recommendations of the pension insurance or health insurance company.
These requirements must be met for the rehabilitation clinic to have the right to wish and choose
Medical reasons:
Treatment priorities are geared to the disease
Rehabilitation clinic also covers co-morbidities affecting consumers
Close to place of residence
Climate at the clinic location is beneficial for treatment success
Personal reasons:
Spatial and psychological distance to the usual environment
It is possible to take an accompanying person with you in selected clinics
Wunschklinik offers an environment that corresponds to age, religion, culture or family situation
Consumers can therefore choose any suitable rehabilitation clinic themselves.
As the rehabilitation research MEDICLIN writes, the form for the right to wish and vote should be submitted together with the rehabilitation application.
If the clinic has already been determined, a change request can also be submitted afterwards.
As long as there is a supply or occupancy contract between the clinic and the German pension insurance or the health insurance company and the quality standards are met, nothing should stand in the way of a visit to the clinic you have chosen yourself.
