(ANSA) - MILAN, 04 APR - Less than two years after its launch, Spotify shuts down Live, the competitor app to Clubhouse.
Made available under the name Spotify Greenroom in late April 2021, the music streaming app had renamed the platform for joining and creating live audio chats into Spotify Live.
"After a period of experimentation to learn how Spotify users interact with live audio, we have made the decision to shut down Spotify Live," a company spokesperson told the Music Ally website.
"We believe there is a future for live interactions between fans and creators in the Spotify ecosystem, but based on what we've seen, Live no longer makes sense as a standalone app."
Greenroom was born thanks to Spotify's acquisition of Betty Labs, with an investment of approximately 62 million dollars.
Shortly after the deal, Spotify rebranded the startup's original Locker Room app to Spotify Greenroom, broadening the scope of the audio experience to include topics outside of sports, which was Locker Room's primary theme.
In April 2022 the rebranding to Spotify Life, before the current decision to terminate the project altogether.

Spotify isn't the only company to withdraw a similar project.

Similar to Reddit, which ended its Talks and ads on Amazon, which reduced the staff of the Amp radio app, dedicated to aspiring DJs and radio presenters.
