(ANSA) - NEW YORK, APRIL 05 - The secretary general of the UN, Antonio Guterres, "strongly condemns" the decision of the Taliban to ban Afghan women from working with the United Nations in the country.
"This is a violation of the fundamental inalienable human rights of women," the spokeswoman said in a statement. "It also violates Afghanistan's obligations under international law and the principle of non-discrimination, which is a fundamental principle underpinning the United Nations Charter."
"Female staff members are essential for UN operations, including in the provision of life-saving assistance", he added, underlining that "this decision will harm the Afghan people".
