We run for cover on the damage caused by ultraviolet rays and not only in spring and summer but all year round and we will think about it but in a different way than in previous years.

The worldwide business of sunscreens

for skin protection is estimated at 14.4 billion dollars and

will grow by 6.5%

in the next ten years, exceeding 25 billion dollars (Fact.Mr Market research survey 2022) but something is changing in the our habits in the light of the sun.

Thanks to the concern for the environment and for the effects that sunscreen residues containing some substances such as oxybenzone could have on the seabed rich in life (fears also resulting from the bans on using them in 'earthly paradises' such as the Virgin islands, Hawaii, the Virgin Islands, the Marshalls and Key West), we are witnessing a change of pace.

And thanks also to the doubts on the application of chemical ingredients that grip the growing population of 'clean beauty',

interest in natural , homemade

sunscreen creams is growing .

Video tutorials abound on internet channels and the phenomenon that was born quietly in past years will explode this year.

The newborn

holistic approach

to sun protection is also seen in the boom in serums and face moisturizers for daily use, together with colored BB Creams and CC Creams: they are increasingly equipped with SPF in 'daytime'

versions

.

They are also increasingly enriched with antioxidants capable of preventing or compensating for the damage that the sun's rays can cause to the skin, such as the formation of wrinkles and above all the dark spots typical of the accumulation of ultraviolet rays that act all year round.

The combination of 'multifunctional' day creams with a protective filter is growing exponentially.

Among the new Spf 50 creams for the year 2023

From the French dermatological laboratories Svr the cream dedicated to girls with sensitive, oily or acne-prone skin 'Ebiaclear Creme SPF50+'.

The emulsion also protects from the sun's rays while correcting the imperfections of combination skin thanks to its mattifying action.

For more mature skin, however, a best-seller is '

Clairial

Day Anti+stain uniform corrective cream with sunscreen SPF 50' from the same Svr house, formulated with UVB-UVA, anti-pollution and anti-blue light filters, it counteracts the

presence of dark spots

and caused by skin aging, uneven tone, blemishes, sun exposure, or pregnancy.

The ampoule has also arrived in the Clairial line, a product active on all types of hyperpigmentation: melasma, imperfections, lentigo, acting on all stages of melanogenesis.

Three actions in a single product: anti-spot and anti-recurrence, thanks to the 16.5% depigmenting active ingredients based on plankton extract and ferulic acid;

anti-pollution, thanks to 2% vitamin C.

Spf 50+ also from Caudalie and Lierac.

Of note is the light and smoothing fluid, also excellent as a base for make-up, RoC Soleil Protect Anti-wrinkle Smoothing Fluid SPF 50;

the CC cream of the FaceD brand with SPF 20 that protects from the sun, hydrates and gives a colorful complexion by reducing the appearance of spots.

The innovative BB Cream by Roche-Posay 'Anthelios BB Cream SPF 50' which gives the complexion a beautiful appearance while protecting and nourishing.

The new formula, from the ISDIN brand, FotoUltra Age Repair Color Fusion Water SPF 50 protects from the sun and pollution. It is a light, colored cream aimed at preventing photoaging caused by the environment.

Also new are the versions for the weekend out of town such as CeraVe Moisturizing face cream with SPF 50, to be combined with the cleanser.

The Kiehl's day cream, Super Multi Corrective Cream with SPF 30, is also corrective of the skin texture and firming. On the other hand, those of Collistar (magic protective drops Spf 50) and the similar Aging Defense Sunscreen Drops with FSP 50 are reparative and protective drops from the Miamo brand, to be combined with the GF5 Glutathione anti-aging serum for an anti-wrinkle and antioxidant treatment (among the best sellers of the moment of the maison).

And then again L'Oreal Revitalift filler day cream Spf 50

Followed by

the attention to the antioxidants contained in the dishes

rich in fruit and vegetables, in smoothies, extracts and ready-made supplements: we will make extensive use of them.

Finally,

the use of clothes equipped with sunscreens and hi-tech systems

(including wrist straps) is making its way, which tell us how much sun we can get and when to avoid it, especially for children.

And above all we understood that putting creams with

Spf 50+ filters

on the face and body protects us from dark spots and aging and many brands are directing their production towards this new trend, also driven by the indications of dermatologists.

Gen Z amazes everyone: they do very well without a tan at all costs (as a 2022 world report by Mintel already attested).

The sunscreen

, spread while we exposed ourselves from the first rays of spring sun,

is now no longer the only strategy.

"We will have a holistic attitude with protection from ultraviolet rays and we will alternate the use of protective creams, oils and sprays with other complementary protection systems" attests a focus published in the technical-scientific journal Cosmetic & Toiletries which promotes or rejects the main methods of holistic protection.

UV protective clothing

offers an additional piece to the complementary approach to skin protection” reads the special.

How do you choose the t-shirt equipped with an anti-UV filter?

"There are three main global standards: those in the United States, the European Union and New Zealand/Australia."

These are non-harmonised evaluations and in vitro tests (that is, not tested on the skin in the sun but in the laboratory) but "they are all based on the same general principle of light transmission through a tissue sample" explain the authors of the review.

How do sunscreen clothing work?

Clothing is naturally broad-spectrum: it blocks UVB, UVA and visible light, while so-called 'broad-spectrum' sunscreens only cover UVA and UVB radiation.

If fair skin in the sun shows a rash after 10 minutes of radiation, then a fabric with a UPF rating of 15 can extend the exposure time 15 times (for a total of 150 minutes).

“A garment's ability to block UV radiation depends on the fabric, its texture, color and washes.

Counter intuitively, after the first wash of a cotton garment, the UPF increases permanently due to natural weave shrinkage.

Subsequent washing has little or no effect.

Wetting the garment will increase or decrease the UPF depending on how the fibers of the fabric swell in water”.

Also widespread in Italy,

Decathlon.

Do-it-yourself recipes follow: the internet is full of websites describing recipes for creating an anti-UV or tanning cream at home”, explain the authors of the focus.

Why such

a boom in alternative remedies

?

The doubts and alarms that recur online on the safety of some chemical components used for 'official' sunscreens and

the widespread phobia towards chemicals

, from fragrances to preservatives.

“Most of the do-it-yourself recipes incorporate zinc oxide in vegetable bases, however the problems are not lacking and they are obvious for most of the formulators operating in the industries: the UVA and UVB protection of these 'puppets' is unknown , no dermatological tests.

Ditto poor aesthetic performance, no preservation and high risk of rancidity of oils used as excipients.

Also absent or unknown resistance to water, unknown uniformity in application and stability of the preparation after a few hours (perhaps under the sun) again unknown.

In short, guarantee the authors of the focus, "the advantages of

The scientific community therefore advises against them.

What about protective foods?

Among the antioxidants contained in foods capable of protecting the skin in an endogenous way are vitamin C and E, which are rich in

red and orange fruits and vegetables which contain polyphenols, tannins, terpenes, flavonoids, anthocyanins and carotenoids.

How to hire them?

Juices, smoothies, juices and extracts,

or with supplements, to drink every day from spring onwards.

Without forgetting that even the most modern protective creams are enhanced with vitamins and antioxidant systems.
