In 2022 in Italy the Internet of Things (IoT) market exceeded 8 billion euros, marking a +13% compared to the previous year, despite the problems related to the shortage of semiconductors and raw materials, as well as the instability economics and politics of the war in Ukraine.

In our country there are 124 million connected objects, 2.1 per inhabitant.

These are some of the results of the research of the Internet of Things Observatory of the School of Management of the Milan Polytechnic, presented today.


    The largest slice of the market is represented by the Smart Car, with a turnover of 1.4 billion euros, equal to 17% of the total.

In second place, applications in the world of utilities with 1.37 billion euros, growing but now close to saturation: in 2022 a further 1.1 million gas meters were installed in domestic users (84% of the total fleet) and 1.7 million second generation electric smart meters (64% of the total).

Followed by Smart Buildings (1.3 billion), Smart City (830 million), Smart Factory (780 million), Smart Home (770 million).

The areas that are growing the most within the IoT market are, however, in particular Smart Agriculture (+32%), Smart Factory (+22%) and Smart Building (+19%).


    At the end of 2022, there were 39 million cellular IoT connections (+5% compared to 2021) and 85 million connections enabled by other communication technologies (+15%).


    In Industry, 77% of large companies and 58% of SMEs have launched at least one IoT project.

"The Pnrr - we read - continues to represent an opportunity for growth to encourage technological innovation in the country, especially in light of the energy crisis. Particular attention is placed on the union between IoT and Energy which provides for an investment of almost 7 billion" .
