The birth rate in Italy is at an all-time low,
and mortality is still high: less than 7 newborns and more than 12 deaths per 1,000 inhabitants.
This is what emerges from the Istat demographic indicators for 2022.
The number of foreigners in Italy is increasing.
The institute's analysis signals a slight increase: the population of foreign citizens on 1 January 2023 is 5 million and 50 thousand units, an increase of 20 thousand individuals (+3.9‰) on the previous year.
And the resident population in Italy
is still declining
.
The population is 58 million and 851 thousand units, 179 thousand less than the previous year, for a reduction equal to 3‰.
The downward trend therefore continues, but to a lesser extent than both in 2021 (-3.5‰) and above all in 2020 (-6.7‰), years during which the effects of the pandemic had accelerated a process already started in 2014
