Five weeks before the opening of the Cannes Film Festival, Iris Knobloch, the new president, and Thierry Frémaux, its general delegate, announced on April 13 the official selection of this 76th edition, including the opening evening, hosted by Chiara Mastroianni, will take place on May 16.
On the program for the great mass of film lovers, which will be held until May 23: 19 selected films, a Hollywood spirit and a historic number of directors.
All under the watchful eye of the jury, chaired by Ruben Östlund, Swedish director with two awards (for
Sans Filtre
, in 2022, and
The Square
, in 2017).

As every year, big names in French and international cinema are expected.
Juliette Binoche and Benoît Magimel, starring in
La Passion de Dodin Bouffant
by Tran Anh Hung, should go up the steps.
As well as Cate Blanchett, who plays in
The New boy
by Warwick Thornton, but also Jude Law, present in the biopic of Henri VIII signed Karim Aïnouz,
Firebrand
.
Virginie Efira (for
Nothing to Lose,
by Delphine Deloget), Adèle Exarchopoulos (for
Animal Kingdom,
by Thomas Cailley), Guillaume Canet (for
Acide
by Just Philippot) and Vincent Lacoste (for
Time to Love
by Katell Quillévéré) will be also part.
Six directors in the running for the palm
Still far from parity, the festival still sets a record for female nominations.
Six directors were selected in competition, nearly a third of the selection.
Two of them (Kaouther Ben Hani and Ramata-Toulaye Sy) will take their first steps on the Croisette, while others (Justine Triet, Alice Rohrwacher, Catherine Breillat and Jessica Hausner) who have presented films in the official selection.
The opening film (out of competition)
Jeanne du Barry
is also directed and performed by a woman, Maïwenn.
A choice which risks, however, to cause a stir, since it will ensure the great return of Johnny Depp, accused by his ex-wife, Amber Heard, of domestic violence.

A touch of Hollywood
Iris Knobloch and Thierry Frémaux have also announced the arrival of several heavyweights of American cinema.
On the occasion of the fifth installment of Indiana Jones (
Indiana Jones and the dial of destiny
, which will be screened in preview on the Croisette on May 18), Harrison Ford will climb the steps and be the subject of a special tribute.
Other cast members will likely be in attendance, such as Phoebe Waller-Bridge, Mads Mikkelsen and Antonio Banderas.
Another prestigious director has been mentioned: Martin Scorsese who will make his return with
Killers of the Flower Moon
, 37 years after his director's award for
After Hours.
His latest film, starring Leonardo DiCaprio and Robert De Niro, out of competition for the moment, could join the race for the Palme d'Or, as the film is not yet scheduled to be released in theaters in France.
Wes Anderson will also make the trip, since he presents, in competition,
Asteroid City
, with Tilda Swinton, Adrien Brody and Tom Hanks.
Finally, Todd Haynes, already praised by the jury in 2014 for
Carol
, is nominated for
May December
with, on screen, Nathalie Portman and Julianne Moore.
Pedro Almodóvar and
The Idol
Multi-award winning but never palmed, the Spanish director is in competition with, for the first time, with a short film:
Stange Way of Life.
A “queer western”, co-produced with Saint Laurent, of which we know very little beyond the duo of actors on the bill: Ethan Hawke and Pedro Pascal.
After the success of the
Euphoria
series , director Sam Levinson will present his new series for HBO,
The Idol
, co-written with pop star The Weeknd.
A sulphurous program, in which Lily-Rose Depp plays the main role, as expected as it is controversial for its very raw scenes.

If regulars of the Croisette, such as Ken Loach, Wes Anderson, Wim Wenders, are still invited to this edition, they will be alongside many newcomers, such as Kim Chang-hoon who presents Hopeless (the first Mongolian film to
be
named in competition) or Ramata-Toulaye Sy, a young Senegalese director for her film
Banel et Adama
.
Thierry Frémeaux has thus respected his promise to "mix young filmmakers and veterans".
