The EU diplomatic representation in Beijing has complained to the Chinese Foreign Ministry over the arrest of some rights activists and lawyers who were supposed to meet with European officials.
"Yu Wensheng and Xu Yan were arrested by the Chinese authorities on their way to the EU delegation", while "Wang Quanzhang, Wang Yu and Bao Longjun are under house arrest", reads the EU delegation's Twitter account.
"We have asked the Chinese authorities for the immediate and unconditional release of the activists," a European Commission spokeswoman said.
The repression against activists in China is known - says the European Commission spokeswoman - and it is worrying for the European Union: proceeding with arrests just before a meeting with our ambassador in Beijing and a senior European official is not a way of acceptable proceed.
And we have asked the Chinese authorities for the immediate and unconditional release of the activists."
