Interview. - Member of the competition jury of the Canneséries Festival, the actress confided in Madame Figaro, on Sunday April 16, about her last shoot, her favorite shows, and the ingredients of a good series.

She appeared radiant in a pearly white dress, on the evening of Friday April 14, on the pink carpet of the Canneséries Festival.

For this sixth season of the event, Zabou Breitman officiates as a member of the competition jury, alongside Shirine Boutella (

Lupin

), Lior Raz (

Fauda

), Stewart Copeland, founder of The Police and composer of series music, and Daryl McCormack (

Peaky Blinders

).

A role that particularly enchants the actress, a real fan of this kind of program.

Among his favorites:

Oz, The Handmaid's Tale,

or

The White Lotus

.

Having fallen into the pot of series at a very young age – her father, Jean-Claude Deret, is the author of

Thierry la Fronde

– Zabou Breitman says she is delighted to be able to watch and decide between those that will be presented in competition.

“I find that today, the series has really won its letters of nobility, she confided to

Madame Figaro,

on Sunday April 16.

At first, we saw her as the poor relation of cinema.

But today, people from all over the world come here to see series.

These will be in the spotlight on the Croisette until Wednesday April 19, the evening of the announcement of the winners.

-

You officiate as a competition juror for the Canneséries Festival.

How was the meeting with the other members of the jury?

Zabou Breitman.

-

When we meet the other members of the jury, we have an almost animal first approach.

Some of them are a little reserved, but you have to beware of sleeping water, as they say.

You have to fight not to go party until 3 in the morning.

Lior Raz, Stewart Copeland, Daryl McCormack… They're all wild.

As for Shirine Boutella, she is more expansive, so the first contact was more immediate and easy.

What do you think are the ingredients of a good series?

During the Festival, each series must be judged on its first two episodes.

The real question, I find, after: "Do I like this series?", is: "Do I want to see the third episode?"

The ingredients of a good series are the same as for any artistic work.

You need extremely sharp writing, an interesting, contemporary production, and actors who carry the text.

You have to have references and have fun with them.

Have you yourself worked on a series,

Paris etc

.

What did this experience bring you?

Initially, it was not my series.

I had to own it.

The very first version was designed by Maïwenn and Anne Berest, and I took over.

But that's fine with me, I like the adaptation.

What interested me, with

Paris etc.

, was to follow five very different women, from various social backgrounds, and who were not the same age.

What I also really enjoyed, apart from directing, was working with so many actors.

There were no less than 123 roles.

Character building

You yourself have acted in series.

What are the differences between acting in a series and acting in a film?

I have just shot in an Apple series on Dior, alongside Juliette Binoche, who plays Coco Chanel.

To officiate in such a program, an actor must above all find his way in the construction of his character, because we do not always shoot the sequences in the right order.

And then, there are a lot of people on the set: the showrunners, the script, the directors who sometimes change from one episode to another… So you have to be very focused on your character and his development.

The best series is the one that made you vibrate the most at some point in your life.

Zabou Breitman

What series stood out to you the most this year?

I have a big weakness for

Severance

(2022).

I would also say the second season of

The White Lotus

(2022), which is one of my favorites.

"One for All"

What do you think is the best series of all time?

I don't think the best series of all time exists.

The best series is the one that made you feel the most at some point in your life.

It's very intimate.

Among the series that I adore, there is the first season of

The Handmaid's Tale

, which is extraordinary.

There is also

Oz

(1997), which was exceptional, and

Profit

(1996), which had been banned in the United States after three episodes as it was so trashy.

Otherwise there is

The Boys

, of which I am a big fan.

It's about superheroes who are monsters - I think that's very clever.

There are also

Friends

, obviously.

From time to time, I rewatch the entire series.

I did this a short time ago.

From time to time, I see the complete

Friends

Zabou Breitman

Would you be interested in writing a series from A to Z?

I really like writing.

I had started writing a series about the daughters of the three musketeers.

My dad came up with this idea in 1988. It was called

One for All

.

Unfortunately, this project did not come to fruition.

However, I had written five episodes, in the register of adventure comedy.

It's a style that I really like.
