Quickly install a new gas heating system or go for heat pumps: This decision also depends on the costs.
Munich – From 2024, heaters may only be installed if they are operated with at least 65 percent renewable energy.
Installing gas heaters will then be difficult.
Is it cheaper to buy a heat pump anyway?
Which is cheaper: heat pumps or gas heating?
In times of high energy prices, many people in Germany try to save on heating.
Households should be supported by the federal government.
On the one hand, price brakes for gas and electricity were created for this purpose.
On the other hand, starting next year, households will be rewarded with the new Building Energy Act for replacing their heating systems.
In some cases, the question may arise as to whether gas heating should be installed this year in order to avoid the regulation that new heating systems must be operated with at least 65 percent renewable energy.

For many owners, this is purely a question of cost.
Which is cheaper: heat pumps or gas heating?
The comparison portal Verivox
also got
to the bottom of this question.
When purchasing, heat pumps are initially significantly more expensive than gas heaters.
According to the Federal Association of Consumer Organizations (vzbv), the cost of installing a gas heating system is around 5,000 euros, and heat pumps cost a whopping 35,000 euros.
However, thanks to a subsidy from the state, homeowners only have to pay 21,000 euros, reports the
Handelsblatt
.
Verivox,
on the other hand, focuses on running costs.
The direct price comparison of the heaters for a family home
The current price for a kilowatt hour (kWh) of natural gas is just under 10.5 cents.
In its price comparison, Verivox assumes an annual consumption of 20,000 kilowatt hours per year.
If a household is heated with natural gas, this would amount to a price of 2100 euros per year.
This is compared with an average heat pump electricity price of 26.78 euros.
Households that need 20,000 kilowatt hours of heat need 5,000 kWh of heat pump electricity with a heat pump (annual performance factor 4).
With a basic price of 114 euros, the annual costs would be only 1451 euros.
The Verivox price comparison at a glance:
heating method | annual consumption | Price per kilowatt hour electricity/gas | costs per year | acquisition cost |
---|---|---|---|---|
natural gas heating | 20,000 kilowatt hours of natural gas | 10.5 cents/kWh of gas | 2100 euros | 5000 to 10,000 euros |
Heat pump (seasonal performance factor 4) | 5000 kilowatt hours of heat pump electricity | 26.78 cents/kWh electricity | 1451 euros | 21,000 euros |
Heat pump (seasonal performance factor 2.7) | 7500 kilowatt hours of heat pump electricity | 26.78 cents/kWh electricity | 2120 euros | 21,000 euros |
With an efficient heat pump, the annual costs cannot increase significantly at the moment: A special electricity price cap for heat pumps of 28 cents per kilowatt hour has been introduced.
In the example calculation by Verivox, the total costs for heating costs per year are almost 31 percent lower.
In the case of less efficient heat pumps (SPF 2.7), the costs should not differ greatly from natural gas heating systems.
Households have to decide individually whether it is worth installing a heat pump - this often depends on the insulation and suitable radiators.
