(ANSA) - LONDON, APRIL 27 - An axis between Giorgia Meloni and Rishi Sunak, forty-year-old conservative leaders fresh from leadership, to promote a line of greater rigor against "illegal immigration" and the trafficking of smugglers, who move both on the Mediterranean route towards coasts of Italy and on those of the Channel (with record levels of landings in 2022) between France and England.

This is the hope indicated this week by the Spectator, the historic Tory-oriented weekly, amidst the readings of the overseas media of the visit to London of the prime minister, who was today at 10 Downing Street as a guest of the British prime minister.

In an analysis entrusted to the pen of Gavin Mortimer, the hope of a unity of action between Giorgia and Rishi is evoked to "deal with the migrant crisis in Europe": a dossier at the center of the agendas of both respective governments, between bills, initiatives multilateral policies, promises of close and polemics. While he justifies the attitude of Meloni and Sunak in the face of an emergency which, in his opinion, requires more international cooperation.

A cooperation-he writes.

which Sunak has tried to strengthen through an agreement with France, where, however, President Emmanuel Macron is not really in tune with the need for a concrete crackdown.

And that Meloni is asking for within the EU except having to deal, according to the British commentator, with the resistance attributed "to the bureaucrats of the apparatus"

Resistances that in the interpretation of the Spectator would also be reflected as a brake on other issues: from a greater alignment with the USA towards China, to a tougher response on the war in Ukraine, to energy policy.

It is a question of taking head on - this is the controversial conclusion - "the incompetence and cowardice shown by Berlin, Paris and Brussels on everything from energy policy to Russia and mass immigration".
