The Yehuda Mountains offer many beautiful routes, and the cave stream and the twin cave at the end are perhaps one of the most beautiful of them.

The instructors of the Sycamore Field School of the Society for the Protection of Nature recommend you a trip to Nahal Ma'ara, which crosses the western slopes of the steep Jerusalem mountains towards the Judean plains.

This is a classic trip that combines tiny springs, seasonal blooms in winter and spring, a large bat cave and is suitable for families in all seasons of the year (note that during some winter months the cave is closed to protect the bats. You should check before leaving the route on the Nature and Parks Authority website if the cave is open to visitors).

In a short walk of about three kilometers, you can enjoy the Israeli forest, various signs of animal activity in the area, a one-of-a-kind cave and a natural slide at the end of the route that is an attraction for children, and even adults.

Sometimes there are smooth stones on the route and you have to be careful (photo: Society for the Protection of Nature, Dana Elstein)

Do not disturb the bats

The route is round trip, and throughout its length we will follow the red trail markings leading to the slide, where we will finish the route and retrace our steps.

The walk in the stream is mostly shaded.

Note that sometimes there are slippery stones and you have to be careful, there are sections of climbing on a smooth rock and the children and the adults will have to use their hands, but don't worry - it is not something too challenging but attractive and interesting.

Towards the end of the walk we will meet a unique cave, inside which is a spring and bats.

The visit to the cave is a special experience for children and adults, and right after it there is a natural slide made of rock, which is allowed and desirable to slide at any age.

It is important to bring water, comfortable shoes for walking, a hat and trash bags to collect the trash because there are no trash cans along the route.

How to get there

On WAZE: "Twin Cave" and you will reach the parking lot at the entrance.

On the way, on the road (38) there will be another sign pointing to the cave.

From the road, you can see a tight gravel path that is suitable for any vehicle.

After driving for a few minutes you will reach the square of the reserve and you can park the car, it is important to note that from the entrance to the Kurkar path the reception on the phones weakens and sometimes disconnects, so it is important to prepare for this in advance.

The lack of reception gives a special opportunity to be in the experience fully without interruptions.
