The Sudanese Armed Forces (FAS) have announced that they have accepted an initiative by an African regional organization to extend the current truce "for another 72 hours" which began on Tuesday and which, violated several times, expires tonight.

The army also announced that it had agreed to send its own representative to Juba (Juba, the capital of South Sudan) to negotiate with a counterpart of the RSF paramilitaries "the details of the initiative" which would be the fifth ceasefire to be tempted since the start of clashes in Sudan on April 15 last year.

The announcements are contained in a post published on Facebook yesterday evening by the General Command of the Armed Forces specifying that the Commander in Chief of the army, Lieutenant General Abdel Fattah Al-Burhan, has accepted an initiative from "Igad".

We are talking about the Intergovernmental Authority for Development, an international political-commercial organization made up of the countries of the Horn of Africa which - as the post recalls - has "decided to appoint the presidents of South Sudan, Kenya and Djibouti to work on proposals for solution to the current crisis".

Meanwhile, more than 3,500 people of over 35 nationalities, including many Turks, who fled fighting in Sudan have sought refuge in Ethiopia since 21 April, according to the IOM.

IOM stressed that it has stepped up its presence in the border town of Metema, in the northwestern region of Ethiopia, along the road that connects the country to the Sudanese capital Khartoum, following the increase in the number of arrivals from Sudan .

More than 40 percent of people who have found refuge in Ethiopia are Turks and 14 percent are Ethiopians, said Eric Mazango, the international organization's communications manager in Ethiopia.

"Arrivals have risen sharply over the past five days, from 200 registered between April 21 and 22, to 350 on the 23rd, over 1,500 on the 24th and 1,300 on the 25th," he added.

"IOM-Ethiopia has received several requests from embassies to help receive and transport some 700 third-country nationals who have arrived on the Ethiopian side of the Sudanese border," Mazango said.

IOM then started providing assistance, particularly for transport from Metema to Gondar and Addis Ababa and for accommodation in some transit centres.

According to Mazango, water, sanitation and hygiene are needed, as well as food, shelter for waiting areas, medical care and transport.
