To extend the shelf life of food, there are five simple methods that anyone can use at home.

According to the FAO, the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations, around 1.3 billion tons of food are wasted around the world every year.

This corresponds to about a third of all food produced.

To counteract food waste, the following five methods can extend the shelf life of food.

Preserving food: 1. Pickling

Pickling involves pickling foods such as cucumbers, beets, onions, radishes, and garlic in a mixture of vinegar, salt, and sugar.

This not only gives the vegetables a delicious, sour taste, but also keeps them good for up to a year.

Freezing is probably the simplest and most common method of preserving food.

Food should be packed airtight to prevent the growth of bacteria and freezer burn.

Meat, fish, bread, fruit and vegetables can be preserved for up to twelve months.

When you take the bread out of the freezer, moisten it briefly with water and warm it up in the toaster or oven.

No lie, the bread tastes freshly baked afterwards.

From this you can always and very easily make a tight Max.

Fruit, but also vegetables, herbs and meat can be dried.

If no dehydrator is available, the oven can also be used for drying.

Depending on the food, the shelf life is several months to years.

Packaged in pretty jars, dried fruit can spice up a plain granola, for example.

4. Preservation

Foods such as tomatoes, peppers and olives are preserved in a mixture of oil, salt and sugar to preserve them.

In clean jars, the food will keep for several weeks or months.

The preserved vegetables are particularly suitable for toppings on pizzas, Turkish pizzas, tarte flambée or similar.

Grandma's favorite: preserving.

Food is sterilized in jars or cans and heated in a water bath.

A vacuum is created in the closed container and bacteria and microorganisms are killed.

This makes the different foods durable for up to one year.

Boiling is a popular method of preserving jams, such as onion marmalade, chutneys, and pickles.
