Australian police are combing a 3,000-tonne Queensland landfill site for the remains of a woman whose body is believed to have been inside a rubbish bin emptied into a rubbish lorry during a routine refuse collection.

The family of Lesley Trotter, 78, reported her missing from her Brisbane home in late March.

The research - writes CNN - headed for the landfill after, in early April, Queensland homicide investigators revealed they had evidence of her death, speculating that her body may have been placed in a bin being emptied into a garbage truck.

The lorry was one of 23 that took the waste collection to a transfer station, where it was compressed before being distributed to two landfills, Queensland Police said in a statement.
