(ANSA) - ROME, MAY 07 - 9.4% of Italian workers remained at work in 2022 for almost 50 hours a week (49) against an average of 7% for the entire EU.

This is what emerges from the latest updates from Eurostat while the debate grows in Italy and in Europe on the short week but at the same salary.

In Italy, more or less the average week is about 40 hours (8 hours a day).

This is about 2.7 million people compared to the approximately 23 million total employed people who spend more hours at work.

The Italian figure is among the highest in Europe: only the Irish (9.1%), the Portuguese (9.4%) surpass us, while French workers are worse off with 10.2%.

But the top is reached in Greece: 12.6%.

In Romania the figure plummets to 2.2%, in Bulgaria to 0.7%.

The phenomenon of overwork mainly concerns the self-employed: in Europe 30% of them have worked more, while for employees the percentage is 4%.
