Selene, the dog, finds it difficult to climb stairs because of her arthritis. But her foster mom has a brilliant and tailor-made idea.
By a hair's breadth, Selene's life would have come to an abrupt end. Because she was found with her deceased owner and then handed over to an animal shelter. There she was released for euthanasia due to her arthritis and age. Just in time, Nicole Frazier from Wilmington came into the life of the dog grandma, took her in and takes care of her touchingly.

At the shelter, someone became aware of Selene, who is a mix of pit bull and boxer, and turned to the "Senior Dog Haven and Hospice" to save the dog. Nicole Frazier has been working with the animal welfare organization for a long time and has already given older dogs a second chance several times. It quickly became clear to her that she would also like to give them to Selene. Austalien Cattle Dog Ben was also very lucky and got a second chance.
"I immediately agreed to take care of Selene without really knowing how far her arthritis had progressed. It didn't take long for me to fall in love with her, and I adopted her," the dog mom told Newsweek. After the decision was made, however, she also knew that she had to help the dog get along better in her house.

Selene can no longer climb stairs because of her illness, even though she would have to do so with Nicole in order to enjoy every freedom of movement. And that's how the idea for a stairlift was born, which her dog now uses as "part of her daily routine", says Nicole. She built it together with her father.

"Selene is very happy with it. She knows she'll be allowed to go for a ride as soon as I get a treat and her dishes. She can get into the car herself, and once inside, she gets her treat. When she gets downstairs, I help her out of the car, and she waddles down the ramp into the garden." Once there, she can do what she loves so much: lying in the sun. Another senior dog was abandoned in front of a supermarket.
Dog grandma is saved: arthritis should not be left untreated, veterinarians can help
Arthritis is an inflammation of the joints that, if left untreated, can lead to osteoarthritis, chronic wear and tear on the joints. Pain in dogs, especially in the bones in old age, should therefore not just be accepted by dog owners, but should seek advice from a veterinarian. Often this can help to make life easier and even prolong the dog's life. In addition, owners should keep their dogs slim so as not to put additional strain on the joints. Short, frequent walks keep the animal mobile despite its illness. But physiotherapy can also help.
Since eight-year-old Selene's video was shared on TikTok under the "seniordoghaven" account, it has garnered over 3.8 million views and over 227,000 likes. The caption to the video states that the dog's "hip joints don't work as well anymore." Fittingly, the background music "When your legs don't work the way they used to" from the song "Thinking out loud" by Ed Sheeran sounds.
Over 1,200 comments gather under the clip, which shows Selene gliding down the steps in the custom-made stairlift. Many people are impressed, praise Nicole's commitment to the dog and would like to get the building instructions for the dog lift. Here is a small selection of the comments.
