Household appliances save time, effort and provide significantly more comfort. Which devices are indispensable – and what you should pay attention to when buying.
A well-equipped household needs various household appliances to make everyday life more efficient and comfortable. But the selection is huge - and the differences in the equipment are often enormous. We present the five most important household appliances that should not be missing in any kitchen or apartment. In addition, learn what to look for when buying.
1. Stove and oven
Stove and oven are indispensable appliances in any kitchen. They make it possible to cook, fry, bake and grill delicious dishes, casseroles, cakes and other pastries. A modern stove usually has various hobs that can run on gas or electricity. The connection should always be made by a specialist.
The choice of stoves and ovens is varied, from simple models to high-end appliances with additional functions such as convection, grill or induction hobs. The choice of the right stove and oven depends on individual needs and the available budget. The biggest differences:
- The classic electric stove, which is often found in simply equipped kitchens, has easy-care hotplates made of steel or iron.
- Modern stoves usually have a ceramic hob, but they can scratch quickly.
- Current appliances are often equipped with an induction hob. These are operated via touchscreen and cook in a particularly energy-efficient manner.
- Gas stoves are popular not only in the catering industry, but also among demanding amateur chefs who value fast cooking.
A stove is undoubtedly one of the most important household appliances in the home.

2. Refrigerator
A refrigerator (usually available as a fridge-freezer) is a must-have in every household. It keeps food fresh and extends its shelf life. Modern refrigerators often offer a variety of functions such as an automatic defrost, an ice cube maker or a 0-degree compartment.
Depending on the size of the household and its needs, there are different sizes and models of refrigerators. According to the consumer advice centre, the rule of thumb for the right size is:
- For single or two-person households: 100 to 150 litres capacity.
- For each additional person in the household, 50 liters should be added.
The appliance should not be chosen too large, as the refrigerator is known to be a real power guzzler and a large appliance unnecessarily increases electricity costs. In addition, when buying a refrigerator, it is advisable to pay attention to a low energy efficiency class and choose only functions that meet your own needs.
New energy classes since 2021
Incidentally, the energy classes were adjusted in 2021 and the plus signs were deleted. The energy efficiency classes are now between A and G. According to the consumer advice centre, efficient household appliances are currently in classes C and D. This means that manufacturers still have "room for improvement" when it comes to developing energy-efficient appliances.
3. Washing machine
Modern washing machines, which are available as top or front loaders, offer different washing programs for different textiles and degrees of soiling, such as boiled and colored laundry, the easy-care program, delicate laundry or wool. In addition, many washing machines are equipped with additional functions such as short washing or an eco button.
When buying a washing machine, it is important to pay attention to its capacity, energy efficiency and volume. In terms of capacity, the Federal Environment Agency advises about 2 kg of load per person. Thus, as a guide to the correct capacity of a washing machine, the following applies:
- 1 to 2 persons: 5 to 6 kg
- 3 to 4 people: 6 to 8 kg
- from 5 persons: 8 to 12 kg

4. Vacuum cleaner
The vacuum cleaner is an essential tool to keep floors and carpets clean. It effectively removes dust, dirt and pet hair, ensuring a hygienic environment. There are different types of vacuum cleaners, such as canister vacuums, cordless vacuum cleaners and robot vacuum cleaners.
- Canister vacuum cleaners are the most common models and are ideal for thorough cleaning of large areas.
- Cordless cordless vacuum cleaners are compact and maneuverable, perfect for cleaning stairs or quickly getting rid of crumbs under the dining table. If you have children in the household, you will love him.
- Robot vacuum cleaners are a modern and convenient solution, as they autonomously vacuum the floor and, depending on the model, can also mop it.
When choosing a vacuum cleaner, attention should be paid to the suction power, energy consumption, filtration system and accessories. A powerful and efficient vacuum cleaner will make cleaning the house much easier.
5. Dishwasher
The need for a dishwasher can certainly be argued. After all, dishes can also be washed by hand. However, if you want to save time and effort when washing dishes, you will not be able to avoid a dishwasher – just like families. As a rule, modern dishwashers are energy-efficient and water-saving.
When buying a dishwasher, it is important to pay attention to its capacity, energy consumption and volume. As a rule, dishwashers are available in two sizes: 45 cm or 60 cm wide. For 1- to 2-person households, a compact device with a width of 45 cm is often sufficient. However, according to the consumer advice center, these do not work more economically. If you have space in the kitchen, you can therefore use a large appliance, which is better suited for cleaning pots and pans. In order for the dishwasher to last a long time, it is important to clean and descale it regularly.
