Suspected food poisoning: A woman in her 41st week of pregnancy arrived at Ichilov Hospital after her temperature suddenly rose. The doctors delivered the woman by cesarean section and gave her and the baby antibiotics.

The woman reported that prior to her temperature rise, she ordered food delivery from a restaurant called America Burger. The doctors' examinations indicate that the woman was infected with the Listeria bacterium, which can cause miscarriage, and the suspicion is being examined whether the source of the infection is in the food shipment.

Prof. Liran Hirsch, Director of the Department of Maternal and Fetal Affairs at Ichilov, commented on the case and explained:
"This is a woman who suffered from fever during childbirth, but she had no other signs that raise suspicion of listeria. The routine in the delivery rooms in Ichilov treat any increase in fever at birth seriously and take tests to the laboratory. In this mother, the bacterium Listeria grew."

He also noted that the reason the woman had a cesarean section was related to obstetric reasons and the development of childbirth and was not related to fever or bacterial infection. "The mother will be in isolation to infect other mothers and so will the baby, who is currently in isolation and cultures have been taken to know if he has been infected. On the recommendation of a pediatrician, it will be decided whether to give him antibiotics as well. The mother has not had a fever since birth and is feeling well."

This suspicion joins another suspicion that arose yesterday that diners at the Topolopompo restaurant contracted food poisoning after 12 people, including two pregnant women who have been hospitalized since Thursday, testified that they ate at the Topolopompo restaurant in Tel Aviv. The district health bureau opened an investigation, which is believed to be an infection from listeria bacteria. The restaurant was closed by consent until the deficiencies were corrected.

Ministry of Health data indicate that by mid-April, 18 cases of food poisoning from the Listeria bacterium had been reported, compared with 12 cases in the same period last year. A total of 228 cases of salmonella were also reported, up from 261 in the same period in 2022.
