Highlights: A man bought a pack of cheddar cheese at a Kaufland supermarket. At home, he then realizes that there is less in the package than the manufacturer promises. Reasons for this include supply bottlenecks as a result of the Corona pandemic and the Ukraine war. Customers are deliberately deceived by manufacturers through hidden price increases, says the consumer advice center My Area. It regularly selects the "Deceptive Packaging of the Year" - in 2022, Rama made it to number 1.

Munich – Inflation, rising food prices: Many products are currently becoming more expensive. Reasons for this include supply bottlenecks as a result of the Corona pandemic and the Ukraine war.

For consumers in Germany, the increased prices mean that they have to dig deeper into their pockets. Prices have not only gone through the roof when it comes to refuelling or heating. Many groceries in the supermarket have also become more expensive. This poses great challenges for many people - some are afraid that they will soon not even be able to buy enough food.

A customer reacted all the more angry when he discovered a brazen deceptive packaging in a supermarket. The man bought a pack of cheddar cheese at a Kaufland supermarket. According to the manufacturer, there should be 200 grams of cheese in the package.

"Deceptive packaging" in the supermarket: Kaufland customer confronts retailer

When he arrives home, the man takes the test: he puts the pack on the scales - and can't believe his eyes. The scales show 197.6 grams - not 200 grams, as it says on the package.

The man shares his discovery on Twitter. There he writes: "Call me petty, but in times when everything is getting more expensive anyway, I think it's kind of cheeky. There's not the packaging included, so another few grams go away". A photo proves what his scale with the cheese packet on it shows.

To prove that his scale really works properly, the man posts a second picture showing a 200 gram weight on his scale. The indicator on the scale shows 199.8 grams.

Again and again, cases of deceptive packaging become known. Above all, the consumer advice center warns that customers are deliberately deceived by manufacturers through hidden price increases. It regularly selects the "Deceptive Packaging of the Year" - in 2022, Rama made it to number 1.

In the case of so-called "shrinkflation", the prices in the supermarket remain the same - but the manufacturers reduce the content in the packages. This means that customers pay the same price for less goods.

Even in a penny market, a customer recently complained about an alleged deceptive package - but she had overlooked an important detail.
