(ANSA) - RIYADH, 09 MAY - Saudi Arabia has announced the "resumption of the activity of its diplomatic mission in Syria", for the first time in eleven years of rupture with the regime of Damascus, isolated due to civil war. So did Syria, which shortly afterwards announced its decision to reactivate its diplomatic mission in Saudi Arabia.
Two days after Syria's reintegration into the Arab League, Riyadh is trying to "develop joint Arab action," the foreign ministry said in a statement published by the official SPA news agency.
This rapprochement comes at a time when Syria is in dire need of investors for the country's massive reconstruction project, devastated by 12 years of civil war.
The Syrian opposition and the United States have denounced the ongoing normalization of Arab countries, with the exception of Qatar, under the regime of Bashar al-Assad.
In addition to involving regional and international actors, the war claimed some half a million lives. Almost half of Syrians are now refugees or internally displaced persons and parts of the territory are still outside government control. (ANSA).
