The use of biometric recognition cameras in public spaces is the bone of contention of the agreement on the Eurochamber's text on artificial intelligence. The text has already found an informal agreement between the groups last week and is ready for a vote in committee this Thursday but the green light to the use of facial recognition on European streets will be the subject of an ad hoc vote.
Leading the battle to prevent the use of biometric recognition in public spaces is the rapporteur of the text and head of the delegation of the Democratic Party to the European Chamber, Brando Benifei, who announced on Twitter "I want to build a solid majority to guarantee this result". Sources close to the dossier assure that Benifei can count on decisive support from the Left, Greens and Liberals, as well as from his group, that of the Socialists and Democrats. More inclined to the use of facial recognition technologies, especially in increasing security and surveillance systems, would instead be the popular EPP and the conservatives of ECR and ID.
