Households in many federal states can apply for a subsidy for oil and pellet heating systems. Here you can find out if you are entitled to money.
Frankfurt – Energy costs rose in 2022, in some cases drastically. Anyone who has purchased at high prices can receive a refund. In many federal states, the heating cost subsidy can now be applied for.

The heating cost subsidy is not intended for all households. Only oil, liquefied petroleum gas and wood pellet heating systems are to be promoted. In addition, there are logs, wood chips, coal/coke and wood briquettes. 80 percent of the costs paid in 2022 beyond the price doubling can be reimbursed, according to the consumer advice center, among others. The prerequisite for this is that the refund amount is at least 100 euros.

Since 8 May, it has been possible to calculate whether there is an entitlement to the heating cost subsidy for 13 federal states. The calculator, which is provided by the Hamburg cash register, can even be used to submit the application if the result is positive. "Hardship aid for private households can be applied for due to sharply increased energy costs for non-grid-bound energy sources," it says on the website. Applications can be submitted in all federal states except Bavaria, Berlin and North Rhine-Westphalia.
These requirements must be met for the heating cost subsidy
In order to be able to apply for the heating cost subsidy via the calculator, the fireplace must be located in one of the 13 participating federal states. Gas and district heating customers cannot apply for the subsidy. They already received a one-off payment in December 2022 – they also benefit from the gas and electricity price brake. It is important for the application that you have an overview of the amounts paid for heating in 2022. Only amounts paid between 1 January and 1 December 2022 can be taken into account.
If your price paid in 2022 was at least twice as high, you may be entitled to the heating cost subsidy:
- Heating oil: 0.71 euros per litre
- Liquefied petroleum gas: 0.57 euros per liter
- Wood pellets: 0.24 euros per kilogram
- Wood chips: 0.11 euros per kilogram
- Wood briquettes: 0.28 euros per kilogram
- Logs: 85 euros per cubic metre
- Coal/coke: 0.36 euros per kilogram
If the price paid in 2022 was more than twice as high as stated in the reference prices mentioned, you may be entitled to the heating cost subsidy. It should be noted that only living space is subsidized. Offices or warehouses are not included.
The minimum amount of the refund is 100 euros. If you have paid significantly too much, you can even receive up to 2000 euros per residential unit. Households in Bavaria, Berlin and North Rhine-Westphalia must inform themselves about the subsidy at the respective state offices. In any case, the deadlines for the application should be observed.
