(ANSA) - ISLAMABAD, MAY 11 - The Supreme Court of Pakistan has announced that the arrest of former Prime Minister Imran Khan, accused of corruption, is "illegal" The judges examined the request for release presented by the defense of the former prime minister and ordered his release.
"The arrest is invalid and the whole process needs to be reviewed," said Supreme Court Chief Justice Umar AtaBandial.
In Geneva, UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Türk called on Pakistani security forces to "show restraint" and called on protesters to "refrain from all violence".
"Freedom of expression, peaceful assembly and the rule of law are key to resolving political disputes, the disproportionate use of force has no right to exist," Turk tweeted, as arrests of supporters of former Prime Minister Imran Khan continue, after two days of violent protests sparked by his arrest.
