2023-05-12T14:08:26.563Z

Highlights: Tipping is common in many industries in Germany. The rule of thumb is that five to ten percent of the invoice amount in a restaurant is common. Etiquette expert recommends thinking more about the choice of service and ordering a simple coffee instead of the expensive coffee mix drink in a café. Some employees are virtually dependent on the additional income, especially in large cities, where a large part of the wage is spent on rent alone. The more satisfied you are with the service you receive, the more likely you are to reward the company or the respective employee.

Many things have become more expensive, and this continues to cause problems for consumers. Service employees are also affected by the general price increases.

The service was good and the staff in the restaurant friendly? That's when many guests like to tip. The rule of thumb is that five to ten percent of the invoice amount in a restaurant is common in this country. Of course, if you like, you can and should give more. Tipping is common in many industries. Depending on this, the amounts often deviate a little. Usually, a tip is given to all those employees who provide a personal service. From the waitress in the café to the delivery man to the hairdresser.

Expensive times: etiquette expert recommends tipping anyway

At the moment, however, money is no longer so loose for many consumers, and prices have risen in many areas. This development has been dragging on for quite a while now. What if you want or need to save the tip as a result? Linda Kaiser, deputy chairwoman of the German Etiquette Society, emphasized in a report in the Abendzeitung (AZ, as of December 5) that everyone, including the service staff, is affected by the general price increases. "So if you use the services of others, you should remember when you commission them that a tip is part of the prize as a gesture of recognition. Saving money here is as rude as it is a lack of solidarity," she told AZ. According to the report, the expert recommends thinking more about the choice of service and "ordering a simple coffee instead of the expensive coffee mix drink in a café, for example". "Then the budget is enough for a tip."

Hairdressers, cleaners or waiters – many are dependent on tips

Tipping is part of everyday life, so to speak. Especially in professions that are less well paid, such as hairdressers, cleaners or waiters, some employees are virtually dependent on the additional income, especially in large cities, where a large part of the wage is spent on rent alone. Tipping is basically a voluntary reward for good performance or satisfactory service. Because "there is no legal entitlement to tips," said Simone Bueb of the Bavarian Consumer Center, according to a report by dpa. However, the more satisfied you as a customer are with the service you receive, the more likely you are to reward the company or the respective employee with a small donation. In the hotel, for example when using the concierge, flat rates have been established for the tip.

Not every employee is allowed to accept a tip

Meanwhile, certain professions are not allowed to accept tips at all. These include, for example, civil servants, the postman or the conductor. In general, employees of public companies should not accept cash beyond the actual invoice amount, Bueb emphasizes, according to dpa. However, small gifts in kind are okay within certain value limits. Whether and up to what value gifts in kind or money may be accepted can be regulated very differently – as well as within an industry. As a general rule, a tip must always be unconditional and must not be linked to anything in return.
