Munich – This year, Mother's Day in Germany celebrates its anniversary. 100 years ago - in 1923 - it existed in this country for the first time. Traditionally, it takes place on the second Sunday in May. This year, Mother's Day falls on May 14. However, the idea for a day in honor of the mother originated in the United States. In Germany, the first Mother's Day was celebrated on May 13, 1923. It was initiated by the "Association of German Flower Shop Owners" and therefore suggests more commercial intentions.
Since 1949, Mother's Day has been established as a non-public holiday. It is not to be confused with World Women's Day, which is celebrated on 8 March. Nowadays, Mother's Day is mainly considered the Sunday of the year when one expresses special gratitude for one's own mother, with a small greeting, a gift or time spent together.
