The center of Reykjavik is armored, where the fourth summit of the heads of state and government of the Council of Europe, focused on the war in Ukraine, will take place on 16 and 17 May.
For the occasion, in line with what also happens in cases of terrorism alarm, Icelandic police officers are on duty armed, instead of as usual only with a telescopic stick and pepper spray, with the gun kept safely in the patrol car.
"Fortunately - reads the website of Logreglan, the Icelandic police - we are not used to armed police. We accept these requests, however, and the police are well prepared to receive the heads of state and ensure their safety."
Local agents are also joined by foreign policemen, a hundred and especially from the Nordic countries as reported by the Icelandic media. They too will be armed, to ensure the security of the summit, which takes place in Harpa, a convention center with concert hall, in front of which the flags of Ukraine and Europe fly in the middle of those of Iceland. Much of the city centre is closed to traffic and the area around Harpa is completely closed to the public.
