(ANSA) - BRUSSELS, 20 MAY - Between 100 and 150 thousand people are participating this afternoon in the Pride in Brussels, according to Belgian media. In the 2023 edition, the event is entitled 'Protect the protest', to remind us that the LGBTQIA+ community was born in the struggle, and that community rights are never acquired and must be preserved. It also marks the twentieth anniversary of the law allowing same-sex marriage in Belgium. The 'Brussels, Belgian and European Pride' also houses a float decorated with three thousand European flags, a wish of the European Parliament to show democracy in action. "Pride is a big party where everyone can be themselves, but there is still a lot to do to ensure the equality of the LGBTQIA+ community," Radjiny Schiltz, spokesperson for Brussels Pride, told the Belgian news agency. "This year's slogan is taken from an Amnesty International campaign to protect the right to protest," Schiltz explained. "Everyone thinks that this right is guaranteed everywhere, but it is absolutely not. There is still much to be done for freedom and diversity.
Everyone should be able to be whatever they want, anywhere in the world."
With Brussels Pride, the Belgian capital opens the European Pride season. (ANSA).
