Do I need permission to put a greenhouse in my garden?
In some cases, yes, an authorization or a declaration to the town hall is necessary. It actually depends on the footprint of the greenhouse: this is what corresponds to the "administrative area". Different from the simple surface, the footprint includes the interior surface of the greenhouse, but also takes into account the thickness of the walls and any overhangs
- For a small greenhouse, whose footprint is less than or equal to 5 m2, there is no formality. It is the same for a temporary or temporary greenhouse (less than 3 months) and easily dismantled.
- For the installation of a garden greenhouse whose footprint is between 5 and 20m2, and for a height of up to 1.80 meters, it is then necessary to make a prior declaration of work to the town hall of your municipality.
- For larger greenhouses (more than 20 m2 on the ground and more than 1.80 meters high), you must obtain a building permit before you can install your garden greenhouse.
Finally, there are more restrictive rules if you live in a protected area (near a historical monument, a classified site, etc.). The garden greenhouse should not then interfere with the conservation of the area. It is therefore mandatory to declare the installation of the greenhouse to the town hall, regardless of its surface area and if it must remain installed for more than 15 days. Do not forget to consult the PLU (Local Urban Plan) to know the regulations of color or authorized materials.
What is the ideal size for a greenhouse?
The ideal size of a garden greenhouse depends on the use and crops you want to make. If you are a novice gardener, it is best to start small and expand as you go.
In fact, there are several things to consider when choosing the size of a garden greenhouse:
- the area that will be used for cultivation
- the so-called work surface, space for planting, transplanting seedlings
- and finally the circulation surface, i.e. the free and necessary space to circulate in the greenhouse
For example, if you want to grow tomatoes indoors or protect from seedlings, a small greenhouse is enough (less than 5m2). In addition, as it is small, you have no administrative formalities.
On the other hand, if you want to grow a rather diversified vegetable garden, then you will have to choose a good-sized greenhouse. For example, the average size of a greenhouse to grow vegetables for a family of 4 is between 9 and 12 m2.
