Warzone streamer desperate: "Get death threats over a Call of Duty update"

What's going on in Call of Duty? A new season has started in the two major first-person shooters Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 and Warzone 2. That's a big deal, such a season only comes every few months and provides the popular games with fresh content.

  • Season 3 hit CoD on April 12, 2023 and had new characters (operators), fresh weapon and numerous updates under the virtual hood.
  • Players were eagerly awaiting the date, because their favorite first-person shooter was out of breath - everything should finally be fine again with the new Call of Duty update, just like in Warzone 1 times (2020).
  • But the high anticipation turned into bottomless hatred among "fans".
  • Now, a few days after the new season in CoD, more and more streamers are reporting that they received death threats from frustrated players for the update.

Death threats after CoD update: Apparently, the new Season 3 did not live up to all expectations. Who is to blame for this? The evil streamers, of course – at least in the eyes of some disappointed players. Streamers and CoD pros are said to have hyped fans with false statements, just for Season 3 to gain momentum in the run-up.

Others say that the content creators have actively railed against changes for 'normal players' among the developers of Call of Duty, wrong direction. The hatred does not remain in a quiet room: Prominent names in the scene such as JoeWo and Repullze are affected by the death threats – both are now speaking out.

CoD streamer steps on the emergency brake after threat: "content creators are also people".

"I'm the scapegoat now": Streamer and Call of Duty veteran JoeWo writes on Twitter, "Unbelievable that I'm getting death threats for a Call of Duty update." He explains that as recently as last week there was optimism that things were going uphill with CoD. Now the update does not deliver as hoped and he is suddenly "the scapegoat" who is now being sacrificed and threatened on social media.

Until recently, streamer Repullze made a lot of hype for the new chapter in Call of Duty. He admits that and still stands by it today. He, too, is now said to be a scapegoat who ensured that the new update did not bring the hoped-for change after all. He and his entourage are therefore sadly attacked with death threats.

Some of you should remember that content creators are human too. You can say whatever you want about me, but if you start attacking my partner in life, then I draw the line.

The CoD developers have this to say: Apparently, it wasn't just the scapegoat streamers who were threatened with death. The employees of Call of Duty publisher Activision were also victims of the loud Internet angry citizens. The community manager "Shaniece" wrote that players should always express their concerns – but only constructively. "Sending death threats to developers/developers/other employees? NO".

Community managers of large studios in particular often feel the frustration and verbal outpourings of the loud minority unfiltered. Because large parts of the gamers are calm, constructive and also polite people on social media. But even the actors behind polarizing, virtual video game characters often receive very real threats: Actress of Abby from The Last of Us 2 received violent death threats.
