The grating is a slab, manufactured in the factory and composed of different materials to choose according to your preferences. The price is often very affordable and allows you to have a nice terrace, especially since the installation is easy. Be careful though, the support must be hard and stable, to prevent the slabs from sinking. Two main families exist: wood and composite. Wood offers a natural side, but requires regular maintenance, while composite is very resistant and offers different finishes, but retains heat (be careful if you walk barefoot!). So, how to choose your grating to have a nice terrace? We have selected 5 models for you.

How to properly install external gratings?
The installation of gratings is simple, since they are often clip-on slabs which makes installation much easier. These are ready-to-assemble products that have many advantages, such as being able to be disassembled quickly and easily in case of sealing problems. Most of the time the gratings are square in shape, but sometimes they are rectangular or hexagonal. The slabs must be attached to cleats, either by screwing or gluing. Ideally, the installation should be done on a stable and flat floor. It is therefore necessary to prepare the ground and the support.
If your floor is lawn, earth and therefore not very stable, then it is necessary to favor the installation on joists. But it is essential to get your floor straight to lay the joists. You can then install them in parallel. The space between them must match that of the slabs. The joists are laid, wide side on top. It is not necessary to fix them in the ground. Then place the first slab, straddling 2 joists, then screw or nail. Continue to the end of the row and then start the second row. You can change the orientation of the panel for a checkerboard effect.
If the floor is straight and concrete, simply lay the slabs on the ground, next to each other. If necessary, you can screw them into the concrete.
How to maintain your gratings?
The maintenance of the gratings will depend on the material. Most often, wooden or composite gratings are found in gardens. Wooden gratings tend to gray over time despite the fact that the wood is treated. It is therefore essential to maintain at least once a year, your grated terrace. To do this, start by sweeping it well to remove the dust. You can also scrape between the blades using a spatula to remove dirt. Then, simply wash your gratings with warm water and black soap, using a brush and going in the direction of the blades, to restore its shine. It is also possible to use soda crystals (1 cup per liter of hot water) or simply dishwasher detergent in hot water. If there are stains, you can use wood sobering, spraying it on the slats and spreading the product well. Then rinse with plenty of water, without forgetting to brush the tiles. As a finish and when everything is dry, you can then use a wood saturator, which nourishes and protects from the weather. For composite gratings, maintenance is much easier. Regular sweeping helps keep your composite deck clean and shiny. Once or twice a year, it is advisable to wash it with warm water and black soap, adding white vinegar for more thorough maintenance (before winter for example).
