Stiftung Warentest has taken a close look at 13 bonus programs from supermarkets, discounters and retailers. Only one thing is really worth it. The background.

In the meantime, point collectors get their money's worth in almost every supermarket and discounter. Some have their own bonus program, other discounts can be collected and redeemed in the same number of places. But which discount apps are really worth it? The sobering result: only one, as wa.de explains.
Discount apps are hardly worthwhile: Only a bonus system allows customers to save significantly
It is probably the dream of many consumers: to save points for weeks and months and one day do the bulk purchase at half price or even for free and save hundreds of euros in the process. However, the matter with the various bonus systems of supermarkets and discounters is not quite as simple as with the stamp card at the hairdresser.
True, many lure traders with bonus programs. Payback, for example, gets out of Rewe and joins Edeka. With the programs, however, the consumer is indirectly tied to the respective retailer. Quite a few people will have headed for the Rewe rather than the nearby Edeka or vice versa, just to get the next coupons or discount points.
Discount apps when shopping are hardly worth it: savings are minimal
It is true that the bonus program at the checkout is quickly pulled out when shopping via app on the smartphone. In many cases, however, customers are required to provide personal information. The advantage for the retailer is that he can analyze the buying behavior of customers over a certain period of time and thus send targeted advertising.
The paying customer does not go away empty-handed with the bonus systems. According to an analysis by Stiftung Warentest, however, he will not be wealthier either. The minimum discount that is achieved when collecting points via Payback and Co. is in most cases just 0.5 to one percent. Rather, it is often not possible, saving certainly looks different.
Rossmann's discount app is test winner: Customers receive coupons on a regular basis
Saving money is more effective with Rossmann's discount app. If you visit the drugstore regularly, you should always carry the bonus system with you, according to Stiftung Warentest. After all, a total of four discount codes are played out every two months. Each of these codes means a saving of ten percent on the entire purchase. This does not apply to products with fixed prices.

Anyone who registers with the Rossmann app will also receive push notifications about current discounts, offers and competitions. If registration is too insecure for you due to data protection reasons, you can do without it. At the checkout, the app and coupon can still be scanned and thus saved. The disadvantage: Instead of four, customers receive only two codes without registration.
And at Rewe? After the exit of Payback, customers fear for the collected points. They still have a limited validity.
