Wash strawberries properly: how to keep them tasty

How to wash strawberries correctly:

  • Always wash strawberries immediately before eating.
  • Never clean under a strong stream of water. The beam would damage the fruit.
  • Stagnant, cold water, such as a bowl or sink, would be ideal. In it, the strawberries are carefully tossed a little.
  • The sepals remain on the strawberry until after washing, otherwise water could get inside the fruit, which affects the aroma.
  • In the water, carefully remove dirt without injuring the strawberries. Then drain in the colander and pat dry if necessary.

Washing should not take too long. Subsequently, the green sepals can also be cut off. For freezing or a chocolate coating, the strawberries should always be completely dry. If you just want to eat them, you can also do so directly from the sieve.

Last year, videos also made the rounds on TikTok showing strawberries in salt water, from which white animals emerge. This is probably the cherry vinegar fly, more specifically its larvae.
