Deutsche Bahn announces price increases – now also affected 1st class passengers

Munich – Deutsche Bahn (DB) is not always known for its punctuality. In recent weeks and months, it has caused a stir with strikes, some of which paralyzed all train traffic. For this reason, the railway is currently being held accountable – and an emergency plan for strikes is being demanded by the company.

But nevertheless, the prices at the railway are increased again and again. Most recently in December, where, according to Deutsche Bahn, prices for regional transport rose by an average of four percent and for long-distance transport by an average of 4.9 percent.

And in June 2023, there will again be minor adjustments to Deutsche Bahn's prices. The Group has now announced this. They will arrive punctually with the timetable change on June 11, 2023. This affects not only 2nd class customers, but also 1st class passengers.

Price increases at Deutsche Bahn: Seat reservations also affected

The first change concerns super saver fares and saver fares. Previously, seat reservation was included in the price – if a seat in 1st class was booked. This must now be booked for a fee. According to Deutsche Bahn, this currently costs 5.90 euros.

The second price change also affects reservations - in 2nd class. Here, a seat reservation used to cost 4.50 euros. From 11 June, however, it will cost 4.90 euros to reserve a seat in 2nd class. And the costs for family reservations are also rising. Where passengers used to have to pay nine euros, the reservation for the whole family now costs 9.80 euros.

  • Prices for 2nd class seat reservations will increase: from 4.50 euros to 4.90 euros, from 9 euros to 9.80 euros for family reservations

Deutsche Bahn abolishes permanent reservations: What will change from June 11, 2023

However, the last change does not affect the price. Because with the new timetable, the offer of permanent reservations is no longer available. So far, 46 reservations have been made here for 31 days. However, Deutsche Bahn has not announced the extent to which a permanent reservation in long-distance transport will continue to be available, or whether the possibility will be completely eliminated. Previously, the permanent reservation could be purchased for 41.40 euros per month.
