Munich – Time and again, products have to be recalled after they have already been sold in supermarkets. A meat product has now had to be removed from Edeka shelves – it could contain listeria.

If a product has to be recalled from a supermarket or discount store, defects in production are usually to blame. If there is a faulty cold chain or contamination during packaging, bacteria can settle in food. These are often only detected when the affected product or a batch of the product is already on the market. The recall is intended to warn and discourage consumers from consuming it.

As the Federal Office of Consumer Protection and Food Safety (BVL) announced, the product "Genussmomente Vitello Tonato" in the 150 gram packaging of the supermarket chain Edeka must now be recalled. The reason for the warning is listeria detected in the product. "During a routine quality control, the bacterium Listeria monocytogenes was detected in the product. The article was mainly offered at Edeka and Marktkauf."

According to its own statement, the manufacturer "Piatti Freschi Italia" reacted immediately and immediately removed the goods from sale. "Only the goods with the best-before date (BBD) of July 1, 2023 are affected. The imprint is on the front of the package." The trading company announced that "other best-before dates as well as other items of the Edeka Genussmomente brand are not affected". The consumption of the affected product is strongly discouraged.

Listeria can cause flu-like symptoms in the human body with fever and diarrhea. Pregnant women, young children and people with weakened immune systems are also particularly at risk. Customers can return the affected batch to the supermarket without presenting the receipt. Recently, a recall also affected a meat alternative.
