The demands on the job may vary from person to person. However, a survey of 18- to 29-year-olds by the opinion research institute Civey shows that a good salary is the most important thing for the majority of respondents – but the work-life balance should not be underestimated either.

Generation Z also values salary

The representative survey was reported by Spiegel Online.

  • According to the survey, 55 percent of the approximately one thousand young adults surveyed said that a high salary was most important to them when choosing a job.
  • A good work-life balance is a priority for 48 percent, the report continues.
  • Carrying out a meaningful activity is a priority for 44 percent of respondents.

Good opportunities for advancement (21 percent) and, above all, the opportunity to work one hundred percent in the home office (8 percent), on the other hand, are less important to the respondents, Spiegel Online reported, among other things, about the results of the aforementioned survey. On the other hand, security through a permanent position, for example, has a much higher priority for many young adults (38 percent).

The survey also provides some interesting results about the importance of work for 18- to 29-year-olds in general: "39 percent of respondents said they worked primarily to secure their livelihood," the report says; 25 percent described work merely as a means to an end." Does the job serve as fulfillment or identity-forming element? "Not so much for the young," writes Spiegel Online on the occasion of the survey. Nevertheless, 45 percent said that their career was rather or even very important in their lives.
