Cheap heating? To save money on heating costs in winter, you can take action now - these five tips will help.
Kassel – Finally summer – more than 20 degrees, sunshine and long days. The thought of turning on the heating now is completely out of place. Although heating costs can occur unnoticed even in the warm season, the past winter in particular has shown how expensive heating can be. And to prevent this, you can already take measures that will save money in the coming heating season.
1. 80 percent of heaters not set correctly – hydraulic balancing helps save money
Proper heating can only become cheaper if the system works properly. However, according to studies by the consumer centers, more than eighty percent of the heaters are not properly adjusted, as the dpa reports. As a result, hot water mainly ends up in radiators that are located close to the boiler. For example, radiators further away are often too cold and are turned up more strongly – which can be expensive. Hydraulic balancing compensates for this and ensures an even supply of heat to all rooms. According to dpa, this can reduce energy consumption by up to 15 percent. The comparison is carried out by a specialist craftsman.
2. Reduce heating costs: replace the heating pump
In addition to hydraulic balancing, the heating pump can also cause high costs unnoticed. The component pumps the heated heating water through the entire building. At the same time, some high-efficiency pumps only need 20 percent of the electricity of an outdated pump, according to dpa – so if you have an older heating pump, you can save a lot of money! Here, too, a specialist tradesman should check whether the replacement is worthwhile during maintenance. Tip: In general, the heater should be serviced regularly. In this way, deficiencies are quickly detected and wear parts are replaced at an early stage.
3. Set the thermostat correctly: Even one degree colder saves money
Thermostats not only help with economical heating, but also make it much easier. This makes it easy to set the temperature without having to manually think about how warm the heating will be at the different levels. Especially those who often forget to turn off or turn down the heating will be happy about a thermostat. And in order to save a lot of money, it is recommended to lower the temperature a bit. According to the non-profit consulting company co2online, every degree less saves about six percent of heating energy.

4. Insulate yourself: Save on heating costs at a reasonable price
If areas around the heating system are not properly insulated, valuable heat is lost. Fortunately, you can easily counteract this yourself and save money, according to dpa:
- Heating pipes: If the heating pipes are exposed, pipe shells from the hardware store can help.
- Window frame: If air escapes through the window frame, it can be sealed with a sealing tape.
- Window niche: Often heaters are placed in a niche under the window. If this area is not well insulated, heat is lost. Insulation mats made of polystyrene and aluminum foil from the hardware store will quickly eliminate the problem.
5. Bleed the heating system regularly reduces heating costs
Do you know that strange clacking and gurgling from the heater? Often there is air in the radiators. And this leads not only to strange noises, but also to the fact that the radiator does not warm up properly. So if you vent them regularly, you can save money. This is easily done through the vent valve on the side.

Even if there is still a long way to go, these tips from the consumer advice centre can help you to heat properly in winter:
- Shock ventilation instead of tilting: If you ventilate for a few minutes several times a day, you will get fresh air without the rooms cooling down much.
- No furniture or curtains in front of the heater: If furniture or curtains are placed in front of the heater, the heat accumulates and the room does not warm evenly.
- Keeping radiators clean: Fluff and dust can reduce heat dissipation.
