Trapping mosquitoes: you can't resist a scent

Highlights: Even a single mosquito in the apartment can rob you of sleep at night. In order for you to track down the pests quickly, a clever trap helps. To lure them out of their hiding place, a sweaty piece of clothing is enough – preferably an unwashed sports shirt. If a small pest settles on the sweaty garment, you can gently transport the mosquito outside with the help of an old jam jar. Special insect catchers, which can also be used to carry spiders outside undamaged, also work according to the same principle.

Mosquitoes (Culicidae) often make themselves comfortable in droves in the apartment in summer. Even one specimen of the annoying little animals is enough to rob us of the necessary sleep at night. Unfortunately, the pests are also real masters at hiding in crevices and gaps during the day - and then "strike" at night.

Luring mosquitoes into the trap in the room – with a T-shirt

So that the mosquitoes do not even have the opportunity to bite you at night, you first have to find the annoying little animals. To do this, you can take advantage of the fact that mosquitoes can smell very well. To lure them out of their hiding place in the apartment, a sweaty piece of clothing is enough – preferably an unwashed sports shirt. The mosquitoes love sweat and are magically attracted to this smell. You then place this in a corner of the bedroom at night. Of course, you should be freshly showered or bathed in this case, otherwise the trap will turn out to be ineffective.

If a small pest then settles on the sweaty garment, you can gently transport the mosquito outside with the help of an old jam jar that you put over the animal. Special insect catchers, which can also be used to carry spiders outside undamaged, also work according to the same principle.

  • Install insect screens in front of the windows, especially in front of the bedroom window. These can also be attached to door and window frames without drilling.
  • Plants such as lavender, mint, lemon balm, thyme, basil and eucalyptus are said to naturally keep mosquitoes away, as the animals do not like the smell. Just place a few sticks on the windowsill or by the front door. However, the effect has not been proven. Here it's simple: try it out!
  • Other natural home remedies are also said to keep mosquitoes away. These include, for example, the scent of cinnamon or cloves. You can put these in an aroma lamp as an essential oil and place them in the room about an hour before going to bed.
  • Also, avoid stagnant water in the garden or on the balcony, because this serves as a breeding ground for the insects. Therefore, regularly empty full flower coasters as well as the rain barrel.

Even outside on the terrace, some measures help to avoid being bitten by mosquitoes, such as wearing dark clothing.

Are you bothered by spiders in the house? These animals can also be gently driven away with various home remedies.
