"The Flash", "Fast & Furious 10" and others • Expectations were sky-high but in the sales test - the biggest movies of the summer crash one after another • Will Barbie save the day?

Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny, the fifth and final film in the long-running and beloved series, grossed $130 million worldwide in its opening weekend. On the surface, this may sound like a decent sum, but the truth is that it is another disappointment for Disney Studios, which has already experienced some box office mishaps this summer.

For starters, with a budget of nearly $300 million, Dial of Destiny is one of the most expensive films ever made, and as it stands, the chances of it covering its investment (let alone accumulating profits) are slim.

But "Dial of Destiny" isn't the only film to make a splash at the box office in recent weeks, and if a month or two ago analysts still thought Hollywood was going to use this summer to return to its pre-COVID routine (and generate total revenues of about $4 billion), now almost everyone has gone quiet.

With a few exceptions — like "Guardians of the Galaxy 3" or its animated sequel, "Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Dimension" — all the big, expensive summer movies are faltering and about to lose money.

From Fast & Furious 10 (which carries an insane price tag of about $300 million), to The Flash, the superhero movie that recorded one of the most embarrassing box office performances for the genre, to Elemental, Pixar's animated film that recorded the lowest box office opening for the veteran studio.

The reasons for the chuckling performance at the box office are varied. These include audience fatigue from stale and never-ending movie series ("Transformers," for example), the high price of tickets, and the fact that the time period separating a film from its rise on a home platform has been significantly shortened.

Now all eyes are on July, during which three giant films will be released that are expected to change the picture positively. Tom Cruise, who already saved Hollywood last year with "Top Gun: Maverick," will try to do it again with "Mission Impossible 7"; Director Christopher Nolan ("The Dark Knight," "Interstellar"), who boasts a very impressive box office record, will release "Oppenheimer," which deals with the father of the atomic bomb, Robert Oppenheimer; And Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling will appear as Barbie and Ken in director Greta Gerwig's Barbie.
