The Navigo pass plagued by more and more scams

2023-07-12T16:07:48.594Z

Highlights: Ile-de-France Mobilités is offering a refund of up to 66 euros. Scammers are using the service to try and extort money from customers. The refund is only available between July 5 and August 2. The email address is a fake and the refund amount is not set at 37.60 euros. It is not clear who is behind the fake email address, but it is likely to be the same person who sent the fraudulent email to the public. Ile-de-France residents find themselves facing a new trap from scammers, who try to infiltrate their bank account through the Navigo pass.

The major strikes that took place at the beginning of the year prompted Île-de-France mobilités to offer a conditional refund to public transport regulars. Since July 5, some people can therefore claim compensation for their Navigo pass, up to 66 euros. The only problem is that the scammers, eager for this kind of opportunity, jumped at the opportunity to bully the Ile-de-France residents. Indeed, since the announcement of the opening of a refund platform, scammers send emails pretending to be the RATP in an attempt to extort funds.

In the messages they send, the logo and all the colors of the service are included. And the emails are obviously signed by the "Île de France Mobilités team". However, inside the email several gross errors appear. The dates given, July 3 and 17, as well as the amount of the refund are incorrect. The real transport service offers a campaign between July 5 and August 2, and the amount reimbursed is not set at 37.60 euros since it varies according to the user's movements.

An advanced "clone site"

The email then invites to go to a "clone site" which is much better built. It is identical to that of the real transport service, and seeks to hide itself by using the address "myremboursementnavigo.com". The login screen where the user is sent is really just a façade, because any username/password can be entered to access the next page.

Personal information - name, number, address - and of course credit card are requested by the site after false identification.

To avoid having your information stolen, it is advisable to go only through the official website of Île-de-France Mobilités to make your requests. The service itself recommends on Twitter to send the fraudulent email "to dpo@iledefrance-mobilites.fr so that it can be traced by our teams". Ile de France Mobilités also announces to file a "complaint for attempted fraud with the authorities".
