Lizzo breaks her silence after a lawsuit by three former dancers in which the rapper and her production company are accused of sexual harassment and fostering a hostile work environment. "I am hurt," she wrote on Instagram, "but I will not let the good work done so far in the world be overshadowed by this."
The plaintiffs are Arianna Davis, Crystal Williams and Noelle Rodriguez: according to their accusations Lizzo, born MelissaViviane Jefferson, Big Grrrl Big Touring, Inc., and Shirlene Quigley, head of the corps de ballet, would have forced them to entertain naked artists in an Amsterdam club and one of them would have even been mortified for having gained weight before being fired. The lawsuit caused a sensation as Lizzo is known for her encouragement of self-acceptance, an icon of body positivity against body shaming.
"My work ethic, my principles and my sense of respect - continues Lizzo - have been questioned. I usually choose not to respond to false accusations, but these are too far-fetched and too offensive not to be addressed." And again: "There is nothing more serious for me than the respect that women in the world deserve. I know what it's like to be mocked for your body. I would never criticize or fire anyone because of their weight."
