Secret heat stars: The ten most beautiful ground cover plants for sun and drought

2023-08-11T10:16:26.011Z

Highlights: The nodding fat hen (Sedum rupestre) is also very attractive to bumblebees and other insects. The felt-like carpet hornwort (Cerastium tomentosum) feels most comfortable in blazing sun. Even though many of the plants are suitable as lawn substitutes, they often appreciate a sandy, well-drained soil – such as in rock gardens. If you carry a lot of watering cans of water to your flowers in hot summers, you may have planted the wrong varieties.

Whether in the bed, as a lawn substitute or on the grave: Most ground cover plants are easy to care for. Some decorative specimens are especially fond of the place in the sun.

Thanks to the thick-fleshed leaves, it can cope without water for a very long time. © imagebroker/Imago4 / 10It is drought-tolerant and does not like waterlogging at all: From May to September, the tall catnip (Nepeta) is not stingy with its lavender-blue flowers. © Harald Lange/Imago5 / 10The finger shrub (Potentilla fruticosa) is white, orange or pink flowered. With a height of up to one meter, the shrub, which bears flowers until autumn, is always an eye-catcher. If you carry a lot of watering cans of water to your flowers in hot summers, you may have planted the wrong varieties. This is because there are beautifully flowering, mostly hardy ground covers throughout the entire growing season, which can cope well with a very sunny location and dry soils.

Often, an occasional (natural) rain shower is enough for the undemanding plants to keep them afloat in summer - only in the tub on the terrace or balcony should you take care of them a little more. Even though many of the plants are suitable as lawn substitutes, they often appreciate a sandy, well-drained soil – such as in rock gardens.
