Soy is becoming more and more popular, but many people are allergic to it. You should pay attention to these foods in this case.
Soy products such as tofu or soy milk can now be found in every German supermarket. As a plant-based alternative to meat and dairy products, they are not only very popular with vegetarians and vegans. Mostly, without noticing anything, we consume soy - because the legume is also found in many processed foods.
For example, soybean oil can be found in margarine and fats, the soybean oil product lecithin is processed in confectionery, and soy protein is artificially added to sausages.
But soy can also cause allergies. According to the European Centre for Allergy Research Foundation (ECARF), about 0.3 percent of the population in Europe suffer from soy allergy – and the numbers are rising. But what can those affected do about the allergy?
Allergy to soy: treatment and what foods to look out for
People who cannot tolerate soy must avoid the allergen. Because there is no cure for the allergy so far. Thus, the therapy consists of an extensive change in food. If you suffer from a soy allergy, you should eliminate all products containing soy from your diet. These include:
- Soybeans
- Soybean sprouts
- Tofu
- Soy drinks
- Soy pudding
- Soy yogurt
- Soy ice cream
- Soy flour
- Soy sauce
- Soy flakes
- Soybean oil
Soy allergy: These foods contain soy
The allergenicity of soy products differs depending on the degree of processing and protein content. Foods that have been fermented or heated in the course of production are usually less critical than unprocessed foods. The reason for this is that fermentation and heating destroys the allergen and therefore no longer causes an allergic reaction in the body.
