Retired army general Hernan Chacon committed suicide as he was about to be notified of his final sentence of 25 years in prison for the murder of protest singer-songwriter Victor Jara, five days after Pinochet's coup on September 11, 1973.
According to the reconstructions, when the police arrived at Chacon's home, in the Chilean capital, the soldier asked to go to the bedroom to get some medicine, shooting himself immediately after.
Chacón, along with the military Raúl Jofré, Edwin Dimter, NelsonHaase, Ernesto Bethke and Juan Jara had been sentenced to 15 years for the murder of Victor Jara and 10 years for his kidnapping.
The martyrdom of Jara, often referred to as the Dylanlatino American Bob, in the Chile stadium (concentration campemblem of the dictatorship) lasted days. They disfigured his face, ravaged his hands, beat him to death and riddled him with 45 bullets.
